Miniature Dachshund Full Grown: Size, Weight and How to Tell If Yours Is a Mini

Miniature Dachshund Full Grown

A full-grown miniature dachshund weighs 11 pounds or less and stands about 5 to 6 inches tall, according to the AKC. A standard dachshund weighs 16 to 32 pounds and stands 8 to 9 inches. The AKC judges the miniature size at 12 months of age or older, so you can’t tell for sure until then.

Plenty of pet dachshunds end up in between. In US vet records from more than 900 Banfield hospitals, the average adult dachshund fell in the 6.5 to 9 kg weight group, about 14 to 20 pounds. That’s heavier than a mini and overlaps only the light end of a standard.

Full-grown miniature dachshund size

Here’s how the two AKC sizes compare, with the FCI’s chest measurements for the miniature added for anyone using the European standard:

Miniature Standard
Weight (AKC) 11 pounds and under, at 12 months or older Usually 16-32 pounds
Height (AKC) 5-6 inches 8-9 inches
Chest (FCI) Males over 32 cm up to 37 cm; females over 30 cm up to 35 cm Males over 37 cm up to 47 cm; females over 35 cm up to 45 cm

You won’t find a length in inches in either standard. The FCI describes the shape instead: a body length about 1.7 to 1.8 times the height at the withers, and ground clearance of about a third of that height. A third, smaller FCI size exists too, and our kaninchen dachshund guide covers.

The gap between 11 and 16 pounds

AKC rules set a top weight for miniatures and a usual range for standards, and they leave a gap. Say your adult dachshund weighs around 13 pounds: it’s too heavy for the 11-pound miniature division but lighter than a typical standard. Owners call these dogs “tweenies”, a word you won’t find in any breed standard.

It’s common enough to be a running joke among owners. A Reddit post with 515 upvotes read simply:

“They should honestly make a middle size for dachshunds cause he’s smaller than standards but bigger than miniatures.”

Vet data backs that up. In the 2017 growth-chart study built on Banfield records, breeds were grouped by the average weight of their adults over two years old, and dachshunds landed in the 6.5 to 9 kg group alongside Shih Tzus and Pekingese. Banfield’s records didn’t separate miniatures from standards, and owners supplied the breed, so this is a picture of pet dachshunds in general rather than of show minis. Still, if your adult dachshund weighs about 14 pounds, you’re close to the average US pet dachshund.

When can you tell if it’s a mini?

Wait until your dog is a year old. Under AKC rules, the miniature division is for dogs “11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older”, and the FCI measures the chest at 15 months or older. A puppy’s weight at four months won’t settle it.

Why wait that long? The growth-chart study notes that very small dogs reach maturity at between 8 and 12 months of age. When a new owner asked whether a 4-month-old puppy was a mini, one reply summed it up:

“Minis are 11 pounds or under at 12 months, so you have some time before you get the official answer.”

How to tell if your dachshund is a mini

You don’t need to guess from photos. You can use the same checks the standards use, plus one that helps before your puppy is grown:

  • Weigh your dog at 12 months or older. Eleven pounds or under fits the AKC miniature division.
  • Measure the chest at 15 months if you follow the FCI. Run a tape from the highest point of the withers to the lowest point of the chest, without pulling it tight.
  • Ask for the parents’ adult weights. They’re a rough hint before your puppy is grown, though we found no study that turns them into a prediction.
  • Check that your dog is at a healthy weight. An overweight mini can tip over 11 pounds, and the AKC warns that extra weight strains the dachshund’s long back.

If you’re still choosing between the sizes, our dachshund vs mini dachshund guide compares them, and miniatures had a slightly longer median lifespan in UK data, as our dachshund lifespan guide explains.

Miniature dachshund full grown: common questions

How big do miniature dachshunds get?

Up to 11 pounds and about 5 to 6 inches tall at the shoulder, by the AKC’s figures. Many pet dachshunds are heavier: the average in US vet records was about 14 to 20 pounds.

Is a 15-pound dachshund a mini?

Not by the AKC’s definition, which stops at 11 pounds. It’s lighter than the usual 16 to 32 pounds for a standard, so owners would call it a tweenie.

When is a miniature dachshund fully grown?

The AKC judges the size from 12 months, and the growth-chart study notes that very small dogs mature at between 8 and 12 months. Wait until your dog’s first birthday before deciding which size it is.
