About Dachshund Guides
I’m Claire Bennett, and I share my home with two dachshunds: Bruno, and Pretzel, my miniature. Dachshund Guides is where I write down what living with them has taught me about feeding, training, health and everyday care, checked against veterinary and breed-club sources, so other owners can skip a few of the mistakes I made along the way.
Dachshunds are the specialty here and always will be. Most of what you’ll find on this site is about them, because that is the breed I actually live with and the one I know well enough to write about carefully.
Where the scope ends
Plenty of what dachshund owners deal with isn’t unique to dachshunds. Choosing a harness, reading a dog food label, working out whether a breeder is worth your trust, deciding when something is worth a vet visit: these questions look the same across breeds, and increasingly across pets.
So the site covers three circles, in this order:
- Dachshunds — the specialty, and the bulk of the site
- Dogs — other breeds and crosses, where the question is one dachshund owners ask too
- Pet care — the general ground that applies whatever is asleep on your sofa
What you won’t find is anything outside that. No home improvement, no finance, no travel deals. A pet site that starts publishing about mortgages has stopped being a pet site, and it stops being useful long before it stops ranking.
How the content is made
Every article that makes a factual claim about health, nutrition or breed standards is written against a named source, and the source is linked in the text rather than gestured at. Where the breed clubs and the research disagree with what gets repeated online, I say so and show the wording. Where I can’t verify something, it doesn’t go in.
I’m not a veterinarian and not a professional trainer. Bruno had a spinal disc episode that needed surgery and a long recovery, and that taught me more about reading veterinary sources carefully than any amount of browsing had. What I write is a well-researched owner’s account, not medical advice, and nothing here replaces your own vet.
What you’ll find
- Breeds and mixes — what a cross actually inherits, and which claims about it hold up
- Health and care — everyday care, and the conditions worth knowing about early
- Food and nutrition — how to read a label, and what the feeding questions really turn on
- Gear and travel — harnesses, ramps, crates, carriers, and what the choice actually depends on
- Comparisons — side-by-side, with the differences that matter separated from the ones that don’t
- Vet and insurance — what policies cover, and what to ask before you need it
Corrections and contact
If something here is wrong, I want to know. Sources get updated, breed standards get revised, and a page written last year can quietly go stale. Tell me through the contact page and I’ll check it against the source and fix it.
Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means a purchase made through them may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what gets recommended. See the disclaimer for the full statement.
