Dachshund Sweater: How to Measure for One That Actually Fits
A dachshund sweater has to fit a long back and a deep chest, so you buy it by two measurements, not by weight or a small, medium or large label: back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and chest girth around the deepest part of the rib cage.
In the UK’s DachsLife 2015 survey, owners measured back lengths averaging 13.7 to 14.3 inches in miniatures and 16.2 to 18.9 inches in standards.
Shopping for a sweater for yourself with dachshunds knitted into it? That’s a different search. You’re not the only one who finds the two mixed up: a 2020 r/Dachshund post complained that searching for dachshund sweaters mostly turned up clothes for humans.
Does your dachshund need a sweater?
Plenty of dachshunds do. Their shape matters as much as their coat. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s cold weather safety advice says short-haired pets feel the cold faster, and short-legged pets may get cold faster because their bellies are more likely to touch snow-covered ground. A smooth dachshund is both.

Owners notice the bare underside first. In an October 2026 r/Dachshund discussion about whether dachshunds need clothes, the owner of a smooth said “his chest and belly have very little coverage with fur.”
Coat makes a difference, too. In the same discussion, the owner of a longhaired standard said she’s “always hot” and only wears clothes when it gets properly cold.
So go by the dog in front of you. The AVMA lists whining, shivering, anxiety, slowing down or stopping, weakness and looking for warm places to burrow as signs of hypothermia. If you see them, it says, get your pet back inside quickly.

Why ordinary dog sweaters come up short
Dachshunds are long for their height. Most dog sizing isn’t built around that. In DachsLife, average back length ran 1.69 to 1.76 times the height at the withers in every one of the six varieties.
Cut a dachshund sweater the way you’d cut one for any dog of the same height or weight, and it’ll stop somewhere in the middle of the back.
Owners make this complaint all the time. Asking in January 2025 where to find affordable winter sweaters, a US owner said the ones they’d bought at Marshalls were “basically cropped.” Another, in the October 2026 discussion, said a Petco sweater “was not made for long dogs.” A relative ended up tailoring it.
Some makers cut a separate shape for the breed. Equafleece, a UK fleece maker, sells a Dachsie version of its dog sweater. It has leg holes in place of sleeves “to fit long, slim, short legged breeds,” and comes in regular, slim and superslim widths.
Its sizing guide tells you not to use other brands’ garments as a size guide, and that’s good advice for any label.
Measuring your dachshund for a sweater
You’ll need a soft tape measure, maybe a helper with treats, and a couple of minutes. Stand your dog square on the floor, head up and looking forward. Don’t measure a hunched back. It changes the length.
- Back length. Lay the tape along the spine from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Leave out the neck and the tail.
- Chest girth. Wrap the tape around the deepest part of the rib cage. Keep it snug against the body, and flatten long hair under the tape.
- Neck. Measure around the neck where the collar sits.
- Waist, if the chart asks. That’s the narrowest part of the body, in front of the back legs.
- Round and write it down. Round each figure to the nearest half inch, then hold the numbers up against each brand’s own chart.

Those are the measuring points in Equafleece’s sizing guide. Keep the chest number, too. The dachshund harness page uses chest girth for sizing a harness.
What should your number look like? Owners in the DachsLife 2015 survey measured their dogs from the withers to the rump.
Miniatures averaged 34.8 cm (13.7 in) for smooths, 35.2 cm (13.8 in) for wirehaireds and 36.2 cm (14.3 in) for longhaireds. Standards ran longer. They averaged 41.2 cm (16.2 in) for smooths, 45.3 cm (17.8 in) for wirehaireds and 47.9 cm (18.9 in) for longhaireds.

Treat those figures as a sanity check, not a size. Dogs within each variety spread roughly 2 to 3 inches either side of the average. A long miniature and a compact smooth standard can need the same length.
The survey also started at the withers, a little behind the base of the neck. Your own tape will likely read a bit longer.
Labels won’t settle it either. In a November 2023 r/Dachshund post asking about puppy sweaters, an owner shared their dog’s numbers:
“For size reference my 7m old is 11lbs and 15in long from collar to bum and 14in chest. He’s wearing a medium but it’s a little big on him, but it does make it easier to put on. The Small was too small for him.”
– r/Dachshund, November 2023
That’s a miniature-sized puppy in a medium. When your dog sits between two sizes, the roomier one is easier to pull on.
The same owner also pointed out that a puppy will outgrow its sweaters fast, so you don’t need to spend much on the first one.
What a dachshund-shaped sweater has
A sweater with a dachshund printed on it isn’t the same thing as one cut for a dachshund. Before you buy, look for these:
- Leg holes, not long sleeves. On a long body with short legs, a dachshund cut swaps full sleeves for leg holes or short sleeves.
- A hem that stops at the waist. The underside should cover the rib cage and end in front of the back legs. That way a male dog can pee without wetting it. Equafleece says its sweaters end at the waist and are cut to accommodate males.
- Real belly coverage on a smooth coat. The chest and belly are what meet cold ground, so a sweater that’s all back and no underside won’t do much for a smooth.
- Room for the harness. If you walk your dog in a harness, look for a leash opening, or a sweater thin enough to sit under it without lumps or buckles in the way.
- Something you can wash, twice over. The AVMA suggests having several sweaters or coats on hand so your dog gets a dry one each time. Wet sweaters or coats can actually make a dog colder.
Winter walks leave more than water behind. The AVMA also advises wiping your dog’s feet, legs and belly after a walk to remove de-icers and other chemicals. A sweater that’s been through slush needs a wash too.

How dachshund-specific makers size their sweaters
Even makers who only dress long dogs don’t agree on what to measure. Here’s what three of them ask for, as listed on their own product pages in October 2026:
| Maker and sweater | What the size chart asks for | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| Equafleece Dachsie Sweater (UK) | Five tape measurements, including chest, waist and backbone, plus a regular, slim or superslim width | Its calculator picks the size from your numbers |
| Longboi Dachshund Fleece Sweater (Canada) | Length, neck and chest; the chest and belly piece adjusts | Medium: 42 cm long, 26 cm neck, 32 to 50 cm chest |
| Weenie Warmers Long-and-Skinny Sweater | Weight only | XL: 8 to 11 lbs; 2XL: 11 to 13 lbs |
Be careful with a weight-only chart. Two dachshunds of the same weight can differ a lot in length. If weight is all a chart gives you, send the maker your back and chest numbers before you order.
Custom work is the other route for a very long dog. In an October 2021 r/Dachshund post, an owner said they’d had an Etsy maker sew a sweater to their dapple’s measurements and “add 3 inches on to it because my dapple is so long.” The person who’d asked tried the same. It fit.
If your dachshund freezes in a sweater
Lots of dachshunds go stiff the moment they’re dressed. Several owners in the October 2026 discussion said their dogs simply stop moving. One described it like this:
“One of mine would freeze in place then fall over on her side with her legs sticking straight out like a roadkill armadillo”
– r/Dachshund, October 2026 (21 upvotes)
Can you train it out of them? Owners who got past it tend to describe a slow routine. In a November 2025 r/Dachshund post about a rescue who froze in a sweater, the most-upvoted advice was to put it on for short spells and take it off again until the dog adjusts.
Another owner suggested going over the head, rewarding, and repeating for a couple of days before luring the dog forward with treats.
If head-and-legs garments are the sticking point, try a cape-style coat. The owner of a wirehaired standard in Scotland said their dog isn’t keen on clothes he has to put his head or legs through. He’ll let them swing a coat over his back like a cape and fasten it under the belly.

And if your dog still won’t wear anything, the AVMA’s fallback applies: shorten walks in very cold weather, and give your dog warm places indoors to choose from.
Dachshund sweater questions
What size dachshund sweater does a mini need?
Go by the back measurement, not the word mini. Miniatures in the DachsLife survey averaged 13.7-14.3 in from withers to rump, depending on coat. A mini dachshund sweater should be cut close to your own dog’s back length, with a chest that matches its girth.
Brands put different labels on the same length, so match numbers, not letters.
Should my dachshund wear a sweater or a coat in rain and snow?
The AVMA warns that wet sweaters or coats can make a dog colder. On wet days, that means a water-resistant coat over the top, or a dry dachshund sweater for every walk you take.
