Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years

This dog age calculator converts dog years to human years with the formula from a 2020 study of DNA methylation in dogs, Wang and colleagues in Cell Systems, rather than the old multiply-by-seven rule. Dogs age fast early on and slower later, so a 1-year-old is closer to 31 than to 7.

How the dog years formula works

The researchers compared methylation patterns, chemical marks on DNA that shift with age, in 104 dogs, mostly Labrador retrievers aged from a few weeks to 16 years, against human data. The best match was a curve, not a straight line: human age = 16 ln(dog age) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm.

That curve lines up with life stages the two species share. The paper’s example is an 8-week-old puppy matching a baby of about 9 months, both at the stage when baby teeth come in. The American Veterinary Medical Association makes the same point more simply: dogs don’t age at a rate of 7 human years per dog year.

Dog age chart: dog years to human years

Dog’s age Human years (formula) Old 7-year rule
6 months 20 3.5
1 year 31 7
2 years 42 14
3 years 49 21
4 years 53 28
5 years 57 35
6 years 60 42
7 years 62 49
8 years 64 56
10 years 68 70
12 years 71 84
14 years 73 98
16 years 75 112

The formula runs fast at the start: by 2 years a dog is already in its early 40s in human terms. After that it slows, so the gap between a 10- and a 14-year-old dog is only about 5 human years.

A dachshund’s life in human years

The largest UK study of dog longevity, McMillan and colleagues’ 2024 analysis of 584,734 dogs, puts the median lifespan at 14.0 years for miniature dachshunds and 13.2 for standards, against 12.0 for crossbred dogs. Run through the Wang formula, here’s how a dachshund’s life lines up with ours.

Dachshund’s age Human years What it means
1 year 31 Full grown; the formula’s young adult
2 years 42 Start of the mature stage in the study
5 years 57 Middle age
7 years 62 Start of the senior stage in the study
10 years 68
13.2 years 72 Median lifespan, standard dachshund
14.0 years 73 Median lifespan, miniature dachshund
16 years 75 The oldest dogs in the Wang study

So a dachshund that reaches the breed’s median age has lived the equivalent of a human life into the early 70s. Our dachshund lifespan guide covers what the UK data says about the causes and the spread around those medians.

When is a dachshund a senior?

There’s no single answer in years, and the American Animal Hospital Association says so on purpose. Its 2019 canine life stage guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan, and skip fixed ages because dogs vary more the older they get.

Using the breed medians above, that puts the start of the senior years at about 10.5 for a miniature dachshund and 9.9 for a standard. In human terms, by the Wang formula, that’s around 69 and 68. The Wang paper’s own life stage chart starts senior at 7, so expect your vet to suggest senior checkups somewhere between the two, based on your dog rather than the calendar.

Life stages in the study

  1. Juvenile, matched to children of 1 to 12.
  2. Adolescent, from puberty to the end of growth, matched to about 12 to 25 in people.
  3. Mature, matched to 25 to 50.
  4. Senior, running to a life expectancy the paper sets at 12 years in dogs and 70 in people.

What the formula can’t tell you

One breed

The data came mainly from Labrador retrievers. The paper itself notes that average lifespan differs a lot between breeds, so a dachshund’s senior years may not line up exactly.

Very young puppies

Below about 2 months the logarithm drops toward zero and below, so the calculator starts at 2 months.

Biology, not birthdays

The formula maps average methylation change. Your own dog’s health, weight and care shape how old it really is.

A conversion, not a forecast

It doesn’t predict lifespan. Ask your vet when to start senior checkups for your dog.

Dog age questions

How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?

About 31 by the Wang formula, since the natural log of 1 is zero. The 7-year rule would say 7, which makes no sense for a dog that’s already full grown.

How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?

About 68. The formula slows down a lot after the first few years, which is why a 10-year-old dog isn’t 70 in human terms.

Can a dachshund live to 20?

A few do, but it’s far from typical. In an r/Dachshund thread about the oldest dachshunds people have known, owners report dogs of 17, 18 and older, and one says their parents chose the breed after being told dachshunds live to 20 on average. The 2024 UK study puts the medians at 14.0 years for miniatures and 13.2 for standards. At the far end, Chanel, a wire-haired dachshund that Guinness World Records recognized as the world’s oldest living dog, died in 2009 at 21. By the Wang formula, that’s about 80 in human years.

Does breed size change dog years?

This formula doesn’t account for it. The authors built it mostly on one breed and note that average lifespan differs a lot across breeds, so use it as a guide rather than an exact age.
